HISTORY OF THE STRAND THEATER
The Strand Theater was constructed in 1914 by Italian immigrants. The structure originally housed The Strand and Sapienza's fruit market. The Strand featured silent films with live piano accompaniment as well as Vaudeville-style shows on its small stage. "In 1939, The Strand underwent its first major renovation and was expanded to fill the entire structure. At that time, it dedicated itself almost exclusively to the motion picture medium."
The Strand thrived as a social center for decades, providing a destination for families to escape the drudgery and routine of rural life to meet and enjoy a night's entertainment. But The Strand began to struggle when multiplex cinemas began dotting the suburban landscape. When cable TV and VCR's became commonplace, The Strand could no longer compete. One night In the early 1980's, The Strand closed its doors and sat empty and in a state of deep decay for over 25 years.
ABOUT THE ALL-NEW STRAND THEATER
The non-profit Strand Theater Initiative formed in 2001 with the mission to revive the venerable old theater as a state of the art cultural, education and community outreach center. After 8 years of fundraising, including 2 years of extensive renotations, The Strand reopened to the public on July 16th, 2009.
The Strand has returned to its original roots by presenting both outstanding live productions and classic cinema programs. It has showcased national and international performers like Debbie Reynolds, John Oates (of Hall & Oates fame), Joe Negri and a host of Broadway and national touring headliners in its intimate and personal setting.
The Strand presents a wide variety of Hollywood golden and contemporary classics, ranging from Silent Film Festivals to Gone With The Wind, The Wizard of Oz and Casablanca to Iron Man, Inception and Megamind!
There is no better way to experience your favorite film than on The Strand's 25' screen, HD Digital Projector and 45 Speaker Surround-Sound. The Strand also features plush, comfortable seats and is fully air conditioned. Fresh popcorn, candy, soft drinks and cappuccino are available at our concessions stand, most of which are just $1 each or LESS.
We welcome you to the all-new Strand and wish you a very pleasant experience!
